Ahead of the King's Birthday Bye next weekend, teams across the league will be looking to head into the break on a high with strong performances this Saturday.

League improvers Sunbury will aim to make it seven wins on the trot in a dream start for the club under new coach Matty White.

While the Lions are flying and have done everything right, let's not get too ahead of ourselves.

They came from the clouds to beat Darley who were all over them for three quarters and dismantled North Ballarat who had legitimate health issues - both games were at home.

The Lions match ups with East Point and Melton over the next three weeks will tell us more of where Sunbury is at in the pecking order.

What is real for the Lions is they're healthy and have added quality ball users and leg speed to a list many had in the finals conversation last year before they fell off the perch.

Having former Essendon VFL listed dangerous forward Jake Sutton (28 goals - comp #2) full time and breakout accomplice Mitch McLean (21 – comp #4) hitting the scoreboard has been an overwhelming feature for the super-efficient Lions who rank first for conversion on goal, which is a mighty effort given their number of shots on goal. 

The additions of Dean Muir, Ben Cameron, Jordan Tentonello, Ben Eales and Brock Landt should not be underestimated either.

Super depth, with few injuries will make it hard for Joe Carmody's Kangas endeavouring to extend their winning run to six. And why shouldn't they give themselves every chance to deny the all-conquering (thus far) Lions.

Ironically the Kangas’ off day against the Lions in Round 11 last year was arguably the line in the sand game for them having since won 11/15 games since including a preliminary final appearance.

The Kangas remain a serious proposition in their own right given the returns of Jacob Brown, Mikitja Rottumah-Onus and the rise of Alex Molan and Strahan Robinson.

The Johnston's have always been, well, the Johnstons, with Jordy adding fuel to the friendly 'better mid or forward' debate with six reminder goals last week. Jackson Merrett and Bryson McDougall have been healthy too, complementing the Kangas’ run of solid form.

Nonetheless, the hosts must take care with their distribution, especially post clearance given a host of intercept Lions’ defenders will be waiting with open arms to swing the 'Whitey plan' led by Tyson Lever, into action.

East Point

The Cobras’ hierarchy understand that wins over the bottom three teams will not be enough to validate progress under new coach Dennis Armfield.

What they're chasing is a scalp, and North Ballarat present as the ideal footy audit when the two sides meet at Maddingley Park with the Cobras fresh off the bye and raring to go.

Forget last year’s 68-point loss as any form guide given the Cobras were in the preparatory phase of a rebuild following a mass exit of players post the 2022 season.

Twelve months on, the next measurement of growth and progress comes to a head in front of a Cobras home crowd who would (fairly) be unsure where they stand in the pecking order - curious what their best is capable of.

Well Brendan McCartney's disciplined Roosters loom the perfect candidates to provide some of the answers - a proud blend of youth and experience that will keep you honest with and without the ball to the last seconds of every quarter.

McCartney respects the competition, is never too far ahead and will reiterate his message of playing the minutes against the Cobras.

The fight for a top three finish just got harder with the improvements of Sunbury and East Point- no results will be taken for granted.

The Roosters were outscored in the second half last week against a young Redan boasting 10+ Under 19 eligible players.

The Cobras won't have that many but aren't shy on their share of Under 20 representatives.

The Roosters will understand keeping a young group in check is to deny momentum.

McCartney's group are good at that, they suck all the air out of a game and have you fight for the simplest pleasures in footy.

Even though the Roosters are likely to be without Collingwood VFL listed Sam Glover who booted four goals at their last meet, expect Jamie Quick (11 goals, 4 games, comp #15), Ned Nash (13 goals, 6 games, comp #11) and Hugh Trigg (10 goals, 6 games, comp #17) to prove more than a handful in the front half and the primary beneficiaries of an inform midfield.

North Ballarat

After a tough month, the Swans get a golden opportunity to end a three-game losing streak when they host the winless Panthers.

Expect dangerous Swans forward Andrew Hooper to have every chance of matching his six goal return from their last meet.

More broadly, the likelihood of the Swans matching the heights of a 158-point scoreline will be an interesting watch as the Panthers endeavour to 'dig in' for longer.

The addition of former Collingwood and Hawthorn left footer Tom Phillips is a welcoming bonus for Travis Hodgson’s group still yet to win a game since Round 9, 2022.

Young Panther Jarrod Bibby has been a solid contributor despite the clubs run of outs alongside former Sunbury junior Ryder Rousch and key big man Broden Collins.

Former Collingwood VFL listed giant Darrean Wyatt and Geelong VFL listed Darby Schilder have added some necessary aerial presence for the battle.

But the challenge for the Panthers this week won't come in the air.

A swarm of improving young Swans namely Wil Liston, Paddy Simpson, Wyatt Squires and the Rinaldi boys are progressing nicely, an adequate support base to more experienced trio Call Wellings (despite his age), Lauchlan Dalgleish, Marcus Powling and the X-factor Hooper.

Both coaches will cast a keen eye on their abilities to retain the footy.

Costly turnovers have been a frustrating constant for the most part. Some clean entries will at least give the respective loyal and faithful in attendance something to smile about.

Ballarat

Two sides, two agendas.

The travelling Devils look to end a two-game losing streak when they face the Burra whose two season wins have come against the bottom two teams.

But the nature of the Burras’ previous form will account for very little as Devils’ coach Dan Jordan eyes a correction from his own group who failed to deliver on expectation in their previous two starts.

Sure, it's no surprise for any side at the moment falling short of Sunbury (8 points) and Melton (67 points) but it was the way they went about it.

Since three-quarter time of the Sunbury game in Round 6 the Devils have been outscored 140 (21.14) to 45 (6.9), while being smashed in all key areas of pressure confirming a clear drop of intent from the reigning premier.

The last five quarters of the Devils’ season has seen them cough up 21 goals from just 64 entries while forward half has also had its challenges with just six goals from 44 inside 50s for the period.

Expect a response this weekend from a proud led group both on and off field.     

For the Burra, a win last week over the struggling Panthers could be just what Tony Lockyer’s men needed.

The feeling of a win on the back of impactful returns from Riley O'Keefe and Luke Kiel will have the Burra up and about, well, for as long as the Devils allow it.

Both sides have had pressure issues in recent weeks, so the race is on to find who can resemble closest to their best for longer.

While Lockyer has surely tempered expectations on the season whole for his group, there'll be no denying the Burras an appetite from week-to-week adding to their two win tally.

Gee, if Lakers' coach Rohan Brown conceded a gulf in class between his young group and Sunbury last week, I’m at wits end to predict the superlatives the former Beaufort coach will come up with for Melton.

The Bloods, alongside Sunbury and East Point are the form sides in the comp taking everything before them and putting away any side that lapses on the job. And a memo for Brown and his group - the Bloods don't discriminate having made the reigning premiers look second rate in front of their home crowd last week.

Just where do you start containing the Bloods? Troy Scoble's improving group managed 16 goals from their 42 forward 50 entries against the Devils, hitting the scoreboard in one way shape or form with more than half their opportunities. Super effort.

Their midfield is sound, led by Jono O'Brien in the ruck, and a handful of rotations all capable of impacting with and without the ball.

In defence the Bloods take more intercept marks than any side in the comp and will feast on any Lakers errant or pressured entries.

Forward 50 entries for the visiting Lakers will be in the minority range adding to a heightened level of care factor importance on the ball carrier to deliver.

Getting through the Bloods is not easy, especially at MacPhersons Park.

If the Lakers can usurp their last score of 44 against the Bloods, they will have shown plenty of character to warrant more of the consistent narrative around resilience coming out of CE Brown Reserve.

Unfortunately for the Lakers, the reality is there's a headache whichever way you look in the form of a Bloods jumper.

A tough day at the office is expected for the touring party.

It's a big weekend of footy coming ahead of the King's Birthday bye round next week. Round 8 provides the perfect opportunity for teams to head into the break with their tails up and wins on the board.

It’s only the fourth meeting at Maddingley Park in seven seasons, but this Round 9 clash carries huge weight for both Sebastopol and Bacchus Marsh as the competition approaches the halfway mark.

Tony Lockyer’s Burra have been encouraging in the midfield numbers—matching the Cobras for disposals, clearances and contested possessions—but have converted that into just one win.

This weekend offers a prime chance to turn stats into wins.

For the Cobras, a finals berth remains close—their first since 2018—but they simply cannot afford slip-ups against fellow contenders.

Wins against teams like Sebastopol are the building blocks of a sustainable finals push.

The ruck duel looms as a telling battle.

Luke Goetz leads the league with the Cobras on an average of 81 hit-outs per game, to the Burra’s 36.

Sebastopol must scramble second-phase contests and make every clearance count to disrupt Goetz’s supply.

Inside 50s will also be critical.

Bacchus Marsh will look to target Jake Owen, while the Burra will aim to feed Cooper Littlehales.

The side that wins the early entries and capitalises on scoring opportunities will have the edge.

A win for Sebastopol could reignite their flag hopes.

For Bacchus Marsh, four points here would provide vital breathing room inside the top six. Expect intensity, stoppage pressure, and a fight for every ball.

With just two rounds left before the midpoint of the season, the stakes are high as third-placed Melton host second-placed Sunbury in what could be a defining clash for the top end of the ladder.

Both sides sit on 24 points, but it's the Lions' mammoth percentage—almost 50% higher than the Bloods—that has them on the edge of top spot.

The last meeting between these two at Macpherson Park saw Melton dismantle the Lions by 77 points.

But with Sunbury riding a six-game winning streak and in elite form, a repeat performance from the reigning premiers won’t come easy.

A key matchup to watch will be the forward shootout between Jake Sutton and Braeden Kight.

Sutton, the league’s equal leading goalkicker in 2025, is averaging nearly four majors a game and looms large as a match-winner.

Kight, on the other hand, was dominant last time these sides met—booting five goals alongside Jordan Kight’s four in a complete forward clinic.

Troy Scoble’s men continue to find plenty of entries inside 50, but their accuracy has left room for improvement.

Against a ruthless Sunbury side who have converted their chances better than anyone in the competition, inefficiency could prove costly.

Finishing strongly will also be vital.

Sunbury leads the league for both points scored and least points conceded in final quarters, while Melton has only managed to win two last terms all season.

If the Bloods find themselves in a tight one late, they'll need to dig deep to hold off the fast-finishing Lions.

Momentum is with Sunbury, but Melton's pedigree in big games can’t be overlooked.

They’ve shown time and again their ability to lift when it matters most.

Expect a finals-like intensity and a game that could reshape the upper tier of the ladder in weeks to come.

The battle of the black and white is a fierce rivalry, the two meeting no fewer than seven times in just the past two years.

And with six of their last 12 encounters decided by 21 points or less, punters can expect another tight battle this weekend.

The Roosters will take confidence from their recent home form against the Devils, winning the past three at Mars Stadium.

With finals now in a much more realistic view and just two points separating them from the top six, this clash looms large for North.

The return of Cam McCallum in the ruck adds crucial experience, especially against Darley’s rising star Lucas Impey, who is averaging 55 hit outs per game.

North’s ability to win clearances should only be strengthened by McCallum’s presence, while Denver Grainger-Barras’ move forward could be a game changer, with a five-goal haul last week showcasing his influence.

Accuracy will be key—Darley have set the benchmark in front of goal this season, and the Roosters must take full advantage of their opportunities.

Statistically, both sides are even in inside 50s, but Darley have been far more effective on the scoreboard.

Dan Jordan’s Devils remain the competition's most dominant outfit across multiple categories—loose ball gets, contested possessions, and overall efficiency.

The midfield pairing of Nick Hind and Brett Bewley continues to control games with an average of over 36 disposals each per week.

This weekend marks the 200th time Ballarat and Redan will square off—a rivalry that dates all the way back to 1942.

Redan held the upper hand in recent history, winning 10 of 11 matchups between 2015 and 2021, but momentum has shifted since.

Ballarat have claimed five of the past six clashes, including their most recent meeting.

This one, though, feels like it could go either way—with both sides firmly in the hunt for a finals berth.

Despite sitting second last on the ladder, Redan are just a couple of wins outside the top six.

A victory here, followed by a winnable clash with Lake Wendouree next week, could see the Lions suddenly right back in contention.

Meanwhile, Ballarat are only four points clear of North Ballarat but sit behind them in percentage, making a win this weekend just as crucial to keep their finals hopes alive.

The Swans will be boosted by the return of midfielder Paddy Simpson, whose average of 20 disposals and six score involvements per game will be a huge benefit.

For Redan, the inclusion of Lachlan George in recent weeks has brought a much-needed dose of experience, helping steady a team hit hard by injury earlier in the season.

Currently sitting fourth with the lowest percentage of the bunch, the Roos will be eyeing both four points and a significant boost when they host winless Lake Wendouree this weekend.

Last time these two met at Eastern Oval, East Point put on a clinic.

Replicating that performance could be essential, especially with a heavyweight clash against ladder-leaders Darley after the break.

Anything less than a big win here could see them lose grip on a top-three spot by the halfway point of the season.

For the Lakers, while the wins column remains empty, it’s all about development and setting measurable goals.

These matchups against elite opposition offer valuable benchmarks—and a chance for some of their consistent contributors to test themselves at the highest level.

Joel O’Connell will likely draw the challenge of limiting Micka Rotumah-Onus, who has been near unstoppable through the midfield.

Angus Gove, a standout in defence, faces a different but equally tough assignment: keeping Jordan Johnston and other key Roos forwards from dominating the scoreboard.

In the ruck, Tom Zampatti has proven he can win the hit outs.

The next step for the Lakers is turning those into meaningful clearances and momentum—something East Point’s Joel Van Meel and Ryder Lavery have made a habit of doing with composure and consistency.

After the bye weekend the action is back this Saturday with a number of tantalising contests set to be on display across the competition.

Scoop looks ahead to the Round 9 schedule.

Expect the Cobras to make it back-to-back wins when they host the struggling Panthers.

The club is hopeful Cobra fans will turn out in large numbers to witness their second win of the season coinciding with their annual "Fight the Beast" MND Fundraiser where a selected group of Cobra faithful take the plunge down the slide into the icy waters below for the worthy cause.

Despite the Cobras one win season to date, new coach Jason Williams has been relatively pleased with the effort of his under manned group for the most part, giving every indication a big win against the Panthers is on the cards.

If the Cobras midfield can get on top of the visitors early, former Captain Jake Owen can look forward to a big day in front of the sticks.

Any returns for the home side from the AFL's Under 18 pathway competition will only make the Panthers task more difficult as they strive for a first loss of the season under 100 points.

Scoop’s tip: Bacchus Marsh

Seventh placed East Point must win and win well when they host the Lakers.

While Jackson Merrett's boys are knocking on the door of the top six, they sit two games and another 34% behind the fifth placed side in Sunbury. East Point will be hopeful a win will be enough to replace sixth placed Redan who face a testing meet with Sebastopol.

Given the departure of Lakers’ coach Jack Fitzpatrick last week, history says a spike in effort more often follows from the playing group, eager to impress off a fresh start.

Merrett will be hoping to put this game to bed early and deny the one-win Lakers any momentum. For the longer the Lakers remain in the game, the less percentage gain the dangerous Kangas will accumulate.

While the likely match result will not surprise, it will be the nature of the projected Kangas win that will attract the greatest attention.

Scoop’s tip: East Point

Despite the Devils’ impressive 7-0 run on the road, this match-up looms just as much a danger game for the ladder leaders as it does the hosts.

The Roosters win/loss record under Brendan McCartney at Mars Stadium sits at 14-3, giving every indication a 15th win would not surprise, with their chances set to be buoyed by the likely return of marquee signing Stewart Crameri from injury.

And, when you consider the potential influence of Werribee VFL listed Jack Riding and current BFNL leading goalkicker Jamie Quick (25 goals) forward of centre, the Roosters pose a real handful.

Furthermore, Dan Jordan's boys will have to be at their best around the coal face denying in-form midfield duo Cam McCullum and Riley Polkinghorne first use out of stoppage. The visitors will be without heart and soul inside mid, Luther Baker (hamstring), and will count on an impact contribution from their promoted soldier.

The contest between two of the more astute operators off field with the magnets could also play a role in the outcome. McCartney and Jordan similarly prefer process over match ups - just who gets it done, a game on their terms for longer will surely earn the four points.

The Devils, led by Brett Bewley, Billy Myers, Matthew Brett and Shane Page, have done everything right thus far but something tells me, this game in particular, they're cherry ripe for the taking.

Scoop’s tip: North Ballarat

League improvers Sunbury will be looking to consolidate their place in the top six with a win on the road over Ballarat.

Sure, they'll have to do it without their Captain Tyson Lever and midfielder Mitch Lewis but you're likely to find nearly all sides are shy of their best 22 with the season eight rounds in.

While experienced Swans forward Andrew Hooper (22 goals) poses the Lions greatest threat causing an upset on the goal front, the visitors seemingly hold the aces covering the former Western Bulldog.

Lions’ trio Jake Sutton (17 goals), Cody Brand (14 goals) and ageless go-to-man Leigh Brennan (10 goals) provide enough spread in the front half getting it done on the scoreboard even if Hooper has his way.

Lions’ newcomers Josiah Garisto, RIvva Karpany and Brand are beginning to gel with their team mates and will continue to build on that synergy into the second half of the season. 

An all important sixth win beckons for the Lions who will look to start well having trailed at the half in their previous three games (Redan, Bacchus Marsh, Darley).

Sunbury aside, Saturday provides a young Ballarat outfit with another opportunity to ply their trade under coach Chris Maple with an eye on staying in games for longer.

Sunbury will be stiff opposition and are set to start warm favorites to make it a hattrick of wins ahead of another road trip and tougher assignment against Sebastopol in Round 10.

Scoop’s tip: Sunbury

Redan host Sebastopol in an all-important game as both sides aim to keep the wolves from the door. The Lions cling to sixth place on the BFNL table ahead of East Point, who are knocking, while the Burra aim to stay in touch with the top two.

If Sebastopol are fair dinkum and play to their strengths, they should be too good for Redan despite some genuine resistance in Jarrett Giampaolo's milestone 250th game (Congratulations!).

Again, the Lions will have to sweat on the VFL selections of Cooper Craig Peters (Footscray) and Will Madden (Essendon) and have their fingers crossed on whether crucial mid Lachie George is ready to make a return.

Veteran Liam Hoy will miss again. In a nutshell, the Lions fall shy on experience and polish in the absence of the aforementioned to sway an upset result. 

For the Burra, they’ll be seeking to broaden their avenues to goal. Hugo Papst (14 goals) has been a real find hitting the scoreboard in a support role for Toby Hutt (20 goals). Too often, Tony Lockyer (8 goals) is the Burras saving grace at either end. What a player. You wouldn't think eight rounds in only Papst and Hutt have kicked more goals. 

Despite having played all bottom four sides (4 wins between them), the Burra rank 5th for shots on goal and the same for points scored despite their #1 ranking for goal accuracy.

Clearly, they remain a work in progress, which is a dangerous thought for the remainder of the competition.    

Scoop’s tip: Sebastopol

After a weekend off, coaches, players and fans alike will all be hungry to get stuck back into the action this Saturday.

To suggest both sides need a win is an understatement.

For the Lakers, Saturday will mark 400 days since their las win, albeit a 102-point routing of the Panthers who will hit 100 weeks since their last on field success, a six-point win over the Lakers in their corresponding Round 9 fixture way back in 2022.

For one relieved outfit, the run of outs ends this weekend.

With all respect to Travis Hodgson and the Panthers, they're not in the same conversation as the Lakers despite sharing the same 'zero win' season to date.

The Lakers can boast mini wins, equating to four winning quarters from their 32, the Panthers are 0/28.

While scoring and defending has been a struggle for both sides, it's the Lakers who hold the advantage averaging 21 points MORE per game.

There's a similar pattern on the defensive front with Lakers conceding 33 points on average LESS than the Panthers.

Here's hoping the BFNL's Match of the Round is full of goals and game defining moments - enough for one team at least to savour in celebration and song.

It's all about making the most of an opportunity that beckons for these two sides in front of a keen viewing audience. Given the current landscape, who knows when the next victory salute will come.

Despite ranking 3^rd (Lakers) and 4^th (Panthers) for average hitouts per game, it does not correlate to other aerial gains with the clubs ranking 10th and #11th in the competition for contested marks and intercept marks.

It felt all clubs welcomed the Kings Birthday break, but if there was one I had to nominate as a possible exception, it would most certainly be East Point.

Since the Kangas’ bye in Round 2 they've won six games on the trot inflicting Melton and Sunbury with their only losses on the way.

Over the period Joe Carmody's Kangas have averaged near 114 points per game, conceding just 50.5 (avg per game) in the process.

If Gary Learmonth's Redan were looking for flaws in the Kangas camp, maybe something as simple as a break in continuity for the Kangas could provide an edge, especially early.

If the Lions could in fact get the jump, momentum can do wonderous things, especially for a young group that has double figure representation from their Under 19 and Under 17 stocks.   

On the flipside I fear for a young Lions group the break has invigorated the Kangas even further.

Their best is very good.

We've known that at the coal face and forward of the ball for a while, but the assurance found now behind the ball in the name of Jacob Brown and Jackson Merrett gives a new look for the Kangas despite their familiarity and experience.

Bryson McDougall, Strahan Robinson and Jack Jeffrey make up just part of the problems that lie ahead for the Lions given the Johnston brothers, Mickitja Rottumah-Onus and Joe Dodd's form through the midfield.

Needless to add, all are goalkicking mids (27 goals combined).

Learmonth will look for further progress from his young group as another timely footy audit presents in the name of East Point.

Excited for the potential debut of star recruit Lachie Bond (foot) who has not been seen since his four goal highlights reel against Drysdale in a pre-season practice match.

Lachie McLean (knee) who hasn't played all season is also in the mix for a return in a possible double boost for the Lions.

While East Point rank #1 for average clearances per game (Redan #8) and #2 for contested ball (Redan #10), Lions midfielder Khy Jess is currently the #1 ranked player in the BFNL for (avg) contested possessions (22 per game).

East Point

If Chris Maple's young Swans have any aspirations toppling North Ballarat at Mars Stadium, a good start hitting the scoreboard will be paramount.

The hosts have won 21/25 games at the venue since Brendan McCartney took over in 2021.

Ironically Ballarat (2022) was one of those four sides over the journey to upset the narrative, but it will be a much younger Swans outfit endeavouring to upset the winning trend of the Roosters (at home) and the pattern of conviction that comes with it.

Just scoring against the miserly North Ballarat defence has been a struggle for all opponents at Mars Stadium.

Since the start of 2023 the Roosters are 10 wins, two losses, conceding an average just shy of 48 points per game.

Given the cooler conditions forecasted, expect goals, especially for the visitors to come at a premium.

Clearly an improvement on the Swans effort here last year will earmark the bare minimum of expectation, no doubt the experienced Maple won't be beaten on what he already learnt here last year.

The Swans did lead at quarter time on that occasion and were within four points at the half.

The old 'better for longer' adage could not have been more fitting in the aftermath as McCartney's army extended after the break booting seven goals to two.

In the here and now, can the Swans marking game unsettle North Ballarat who are so accountable behind the ball?

The Swans will want to ensure their link up by foot is in order to find a way through especially in the absence of Rhett Montgomery (SANFL).

The Swans are not without a prizefighter’s chance, but I expect the pressure from the hosts at the coalface to prove the overwhelming difference.

The King’s Birthday break was timely for these two sides amid a climbing injury toll ahead of their Round 9 clash at the Clarke Oval.

While the Burras’ on field woes, largely beyond their control, has attracted varying degrees of scrutiny, Sunbury copped some misfortune of their own with injuries to Mitch Lewis, Jake Egan, Nathan Doyle and earlier, season ending ACL tear for Tom Scanlon.

Ben Cameron (Coburg) and Harry Minton-Connell (Williamstown) remain in the VFL.

The loss of personnel surely played a role in the Lions’ first loss of the season on the road against the Kangas in Round 8.

Needless to add, Matty White's group was gallant in defeat despite trailing at every change.

Conceding periods of four and five goals in succession really was the difference.

Just what resemblance of each side’s best 22 we see on Saturday will surely play its own part but given the depth of the Lions and season returns of the Burra to date on the win/loss front, it's hard to entertain a conversation in the 'upset' camp.

But that notion will account for very little to Burra leader Tony Lockyer who is fully aware of where his team is at.

You have to admire the popular veteran having made little reference to the changes in personnel, that has clearly impacted the recent perennial finalists.

Sebastopol will arrive in Sunbury with every intention of winning, despite its unlikelihood.

Darley coach Dan Jordan gave the Burra some encouragement after the Devils’ 19-point win in Round 8 suggesting Lockyer's group will test, if not upset a few sides on the way home.

For Matthew White's Sunbury, it will be all about maintaining their good habits that led them to a promising 6-1 start to the season ahead of a Round 10 blockbuster against Melton.

Special mention to Lions’ forward Mitch McLean who is having a breakout season. His 24 goals to date (comp rank #4) has been complemented with 20 forward 50 tackles (Comp rank #1).

Call this bout an entree for the Bloods ahead of their top of the table clash on the road to Sunbury in Round 10 - a chance to regroup and fine tune after the week off.

Dennis Armfield's touring Cobras will have had a fortnight to identify and plan for their toughest assignment to date. So where do you start?

Sure, Braedan Kight's 41 goals (7 games) fits the 'concern' criteria.

The Bloods’ captain is averaging a goal every 3.5 disposals in 2024 which is truly remarkable for a 16 disposal player. The damage is not limited there either from the x-factor talent.

While Kight is shy of six feet in height, he leads the competition for marks inside 50 (5.1 avg per game), goal involvements (7.9) and ranks 6th for score involvements (9.9).

At the other end you have a dominant Bloods’ back six led by Jordy Cotter who ranks #1 at the club for kicks, efficiency by foot, marks, intercept marks and intercept possessions.

Only Sunbury's Tyson Lever has taken more intercept marks than Cotter. Keeping the ball away from him despite a clear message will be easier said than done.

The Cobras will need a 'spike' in most areas to compete against the relentless Bloods.

Jake Owen's importance is not capped by his contested marking ability alone (Comp rank #2). The star forward ranks #7 in the comp for both goal involvements (6.3 per game) and score involvements (9.6) - worthy of a bona fide match up from the Scoble camp.

Ruckman Luke Goetz leads the Cobras clearly for intercept marks ahead of defenders Jack Parente, Simon La Franchi and Collingwood VFL listed recruit Rye Penny.

Expect the Cobras, like all other BFNL sides to be stretched in the air and at ground level against the competition yardstick and be made to pay on the scoreboard for their inefficiencies.

As we approach the offical halfway mark of the home and away season, each club will have faced one another once to complete the league circuit.

With plenty of valuable wins on the board in Round 9, there will be eyeballs everywhere across the league awaiting results.

It was nothing short of an epic battle the last time these two sides met.

With a grand final berth on the line, East Point and Darley went toe-to-toe into overtime at Marty Busch Reserve.

It was the Kangaroos who emerged victorious, advancing to their third grand final in five full seasons.

But as we approach the halfway mark of 2025, it’s the Devils who come in as favourites for this cracking Round 9 clash.

While the overall head-to-head between the two is relatively even, a strong trend has emerged — home ground dominance.

Since 2018, these clubs have played ten home-and-away fixtures against each other.

Only one of those games has been won by the away team, with Darley boasting a perfect 4-0 record at home and East Point 5-1 on their turf.

Statistically, the two sides are well matched, though Darley edge ahead slightly in most key areas.

Accuracy in front of goal has been a major weapon for the Devils, while East Point trail — coming off an 18.23 scoreline in Round 8.

That conversion rate must tighten if they want to get a win on the road.

The Roos will be boosted by the return of Matt Johnston and Joe Dodd — two crafty ball users through the midfield — while Darley welcome back the Adam Azzopardi.

Roos defenders Liam Howard and Sam Cue will need to rise to the occasion to stem the Devils’ forward 50 entries.

At the other end, Darley’s Billy Myers has been the general down back all season, a key part of the league’s stingiest defence.

Forwards Bryson McDougall and Jordan Johnston will need to make the most of every chance that comes their way.

With top-two spots on the line, this shapes as a defining moment in the 2025 season.

It’s been more than a decade since East Point last claimed a win on Darley’s home deck — will history be re-written this weekend?

Tip:Darley

As with all clashes in Round 9, the Ballarat and Melton matchup highlights just how vital four points are at this point in the season.

For the Bloods, a win secures a top-two position at the halfway mark.

A loss, however, could see them slip as low as fourth in what’s shaping up to be one of the tightest ladders in recent memory.

The Swans currently sit six points clear of sixth-placed Redan, but with injuries piling up and the lowest percentage among the top eight, a loss here could make their second half of the season a serious uphill battle.

Melton has certainly had the upper hand in this rivalry in recent years, winning nine of the past ten encounters.

That said, these sides have only met twice at Alfredton Recreation Reserve since 2019 — with Ballarat winning in 2019 and Melton returning the favour in 2022.

If Ballarat wants to challenge the Bloods, they’ll need to capitalise on their inside 50 entries.

On average, Melton are +10 in that area — a stat that has helped them control games and build scoreboard pressure.

But if there's one area Troy Scoble’s group can target, it’s Melton’s conversion: the Bloods have recorded more points than goals this season, leaving the door ajar for opposition.

Ballarat will unveil an exciting debutant in 16-year-old Emerton Hooper.

His selection is a testament to the strength of the club’s development pathways and the trust they’re placing in their next generation.

Melton, meanwhile, remains largely unchanged, with the only notable omission being Ryan Carter, unavailable due to interstate commitments.

With opportunity knocking for both sides, it’s a massive test for Ballarat’s young and injury-hit outfit — and a chance for Melton to cement their premiership credentials on the road.

Tip:Melton

There’s plenty on the line in this clash — and not just the four points.

Sunbury sit fourth on the ladder heading into the halfway mark of the season. A win could see them jump into the top two, while a loss wouldn’t knock them out of the four, but it would make a top-three finish much tougher to lock in.

For Bacchus Marsh, a win keeps their finals hopes well and truly alive.

But depending on other Round 9 results, a loss could see them slip out of the six — and suddenly in need of a few upsets in the back half of the year.

Clarke Oval has long been a tough hunting ground for the Cobras, with just three wins there — 2015, 2018, and 2023.

History suggests they’ll need to be at their best to break through once again.

For that to happen, a strong first half is essential.

Sunbury have been the most damaging side offensively this season, leading the league in total scores — thanks largely to the forward trio of Jake Sutton, Daniel Johnston, and Jake Egan.

Slowing their influence will be critical, with Tarkyn Findlay likely handed a key shutdown role.

While Bacchus Marsh have consistently finished games strong, their third quarters have been their Achilles heel.

With the Lions’ ability to score quickly and in bursts, Dennis Armfield’s group will need a complete four-quarter performance to challenge them.

If the Cobras can bring their trademark tackling pressure and disrupt Sunbury’s quick ball movement, they’ll be in with a shot.

But if the Lions bring the same consistent brand they’ve shown so far in 2025, they’ll be hard to stop on home turf.

Tip: Sunbury

It’s essentially a must-win for both teams at Marty Busch this weekend.

With just two wins apiece so far, both Clint Proctor and Tony Lockyer would have hoped for more from the opening half of the season.

But despite slow starts, both sides remain in the hunt for finals — and this clash will go a long way to deciding who stays in the race.

Thanks to a stronger percentage, North Ballarat sits just two points outside the six.

A win here could see them leapfrog into a finals position by weekend’s end.

For the Burra, their Round 8 win over Bacchus Marsh has breathed new life into their campaign, and with the gap to sixth spot only four points, it’s games like these that become critical in the chase.

Since the beginning of 2019, Sebastopol has had the edge in this match-up, winning five of their last eight encounters.

They’ve only hosted the Roosters twice at Marty Busch Reserve in that period — both ending in wins for the home side.

The Roosters will be forced to shuffle the magnets with Cam McCallum sidelined through injury.

Expect Ryan Luke to rotate through the middle more frequently, with his support ruck work sure to test Burra big man Liam Stow.

With Lockyer back in the line-up for Sebastopol, centre bounce contests and stoppage clearances should tighten right up.

While neither side boasts a dominant goalkicker, both have benefitted from a healthy spread of contributors up forward.

That makes defensive organisation all the more important, both back six units will need to be switched on, covering all avenues to goal.

Expect intercept marking and team defence structures — like pressing high and zoning back — to be key for both outfits in what could be a low-scoring grind.

With finals on the line and momentum up for grabs, this one looms as a classic scrap between two sides with plenty to prove.

Tip:Sebastopol

Wins have been hard to come by for both teams this season — both showing glimpses of well-executed, finals-worthy football, but neither able to convert consistently.

Redan has had the edge in recent history, winning four of their last five and six of their past nine encounters with the Lakers.

However, last season told a different story — each side claimed a narrow win on their home turf, proving there's not much separating them when they bring their best.

Injury has continued to plague the Lions, with coach Gary Learmonth digging deep into the club's youth stocks to fill key roles.

It's created opportunity but has also tested Redan’s depth week in and week out.

For Rohan Brown and the Lakers, success this season isn’t solely defined by wins — but on paper, this is one of their best chances to bank four points.

At close to full strength, and facing a depleted Redan outfit sitting just one rung above them on the ladder, Lake Wendouree will need to leave nothing in the tank.

Winning the clearances is step one, but for the Lakers, they simply need to generate more forward entries.

Angus Gove has done plenty of work rebounding out of the backline, but it’ll be the likes of Will Clark and Kynan Raven that need to impact the other end by delivering the ball inside 50 with purpose.

For the Lions, winning the contested footy will be crucial — an area where Jake Connolly and Brody Pope have led the charge this year.

Redan have managed to get the ball inside 50 consistently enough, but it’s conversion that’s let them down.

Accuracy in front of goal will be a major focus if they’re to take control of this one.

With both clubs desperate for a win, expect a spirited clash between two proud sides.

An enthralling first week of A Grade finals raised eyebrows across the courts. From heavy-weight battles, dominant wins and upset victories, the weekend's action had it all.

North Ballarat have reminded the BFNL’s premier netball competition that they’re here to go all the way.

Annie McCartin’s Roosters produced a commanding win over the Cobras, extending their lead at every break and proving once again their ability to perform in finals.

With Poppy Douglas returning from overseas on Saturday, youngster Georgia Bodey earned the starting GA bib and more than rose to the occasion.

With goal shooter Maddy Selmon the main target under the post this season, Bodey added a new look to North’s goal ring — shooting 13 from 14 in the first half alongside Selmon’s 14 from 16.

Nichole Gleeson kept her side unchanged through the first half, letting them settle into their first finals appearance in six years.

But trailing by 12 at the main break, she made a series of changes heading into the third and throughout the second half.

Lauren Shankland, part of the winless Cobras line-up last season, was injected into wing attack, while Eliza Moodie shifted from goal defence to goal attack to take some pressure off youngster Jasmine Paama.

McCartin made changes of her own, showing the depth of the Roosters’ line-up.

Douglas slotted into goal attack, feeding Selmon as she has for much of the season, while Stacey Matthews brought fresh legs and plenty of finals experience at wing attack.

By three-quarter time, the margin had stretched to 20.

All Bacchus Marsh could do in the last was fight it out, and to their credit they did.

Kimberley Phillips became a target under the post, opened up by Paama’s movement, and the Cobras managed to take the final term 13–12.

While the season ends here for Bacchus Marsh, making finals probably feels like a win in itself — a sign of what hard work and club culture can build.

North Ballarat, meanwhile, turn their focus to Sunbury as they look to lock in a spot in the 2025 A Grade Grand Final.

If there was a team capable of writing the fairy tale of sixth beating third, we said it would be Lake Wendouree. And on Saturday at Maddingley Park, they did exactly that.

A commanding start from the Lakers was all it took to book their spot in this weekend’s Semi Final 1.

Led by defenders Kate Drew (GK) and Remi Hooper (GD), the Lakers capitalised early, feeding young shooters Ade Funcke (GS) and Ebony Porter (GA), who converted 11 of 16 attempts to Redan’s 6 from 9.

The Lions looked to shift momentum in the second quarter with the injection of recruit Tahlia Thompson into GA.

She made an immediate impact, shooting 6 from 8.

But Courtney McLean’s Lakers had a response of their own, calling on the experience of Mel Allen at GS, who steadied with 4 from 5.

Trailing by four at half-time, Redan threw everything at the contest through the midcourt.

Lily Francis and Sadie Cheeseman fought hard through the centre position, while defenders Erin Riley (GK) and coach Ash Smith (GD) started to generate turnovers in the Lakers’ attack.

The Lions dominated possession, producing 15 scoring shots to the Lakers’ 9, but Allen and Porter were clinical, finishing the quarter at a flawless 100%.

With just two goals in it heading into the last, the game was there for the taking.

Redan clawed back the lead late and looked set to spoil the fairy tale.

But the composure and relentless defence of Lake Wendouree came to the fore, just as it had in the first quarter, sealing the win by a single goal.

The Lakers now continue their dream run as they prepare to face Darley in Semi Final 1 on Sunday.

The qualifying final between Sunbury and Darley could well have been a Grand Final preview.

With the two sides boasting more players than any other team with high-level netball experience, the scoreline reflected the class of netball on display.

Sunbury wasted no time on their journey to back-to-back flags, finding competition leading goal scorer Becca Hicks under the ring, missing not a single shot in the opening term.

Down the other end, Sunbury’s Elly Randall (GK) and Eliza Gollant (GD) were able to double team Darley’s Liv Cawthray (GS) and limit the feeds to the dominate shooter.

However, captain Mon Nagle (GA) lead from the front, providing another scoring option in the goaling ring for her side.

Whilst Shannon Blackman’s side remined unchanged heading into the second term trailing by one, Kim Bailey experimented with the wing defence position across the opening half, seeing who out of Georgia Hellyer, Sarah Croft and Abigail Inglis could provide a shutdown of the speedy Lucy Taylor (WA) and provide connection in transition.

Darley’s reliable duo Anna Lawley (GD) and Matilda Elliott (GK) were able to limit the Sunbury’s feeds to Hicks in the second quarter, covering the high ball beautifully.

Similar to the Devils, it was goal attack Caitlin Hill who then provided the go to option, contributing 7 goals from 9 attempts.

With both Blackman and Bailey having done their homework on how one another’s sides play, changes at the main break were made by both teams.

For the Lions, Croft came into the centre to limit Blackman’s influence and Tayla Honey was moved to wing defence. For the Devils, Ailish McCormack entered the game into wing attack and Lucy Taylor was given the task of combating reigning dual Sally McLean medallist Simona Di Fillipo.

The game started to drift in the hands of Sunbury, extending their lead throughout the third term.

Darley responded though, bringing McCormack into the goal ring, and Jaime Smith back into wing defence.

They clawed the game back to trail by three heading into the last.

As the final quarter progressed, Sunbury extended their lead out to as much as six goals.

But the relentless pressure from the Devils and perhaps complacency from the Lions saw back-to-back turnover through attack.

The Devils capitalised and brought the score back within one.

However, it took one turnover for the Lions to find their rhythm again and remain composed and in control to take a three-goal win.

Darley will now face Lake Wendouree to keep their finals hopes alive, with Sunbury set to take on North Ballarat after Redan’s shock exit.

Round 1 Football Preview with 'Scoop'

Given current speculation surrounding various teams prospects in 2026, the BFNL could not have scripted a better grouping of matches for an enthralling start to the season.

League heavyweights Darley and Sunbury are sure to attract a bumper crowd at Darley Park, curious of what the next chapter holds.

The mission for Matthew White’s Lions will be to ‘find a way through’ a frugal Devils defence led by Billy Myers and Matthew Brett.

While the Pride boast an imposing front six more than capable posting a winning score, the weight of expectation will hinge primarily on their midfield and quality of forward 50 entries.

However, such luxuries won’t be easily afforded as the Devils’ star laden midfield look to mark territory with superior gains of their own.

While the prospect of Brett Bewley, Nick Hind and Luther Baker is daunting for any opposition, the pre-season form of Joel Cadman and Darcy Matricardi only raises the degree of difficulty for the Lions who were 0-4 against the Devils in 2025.

Despite the recent H2H record, White will be fully aware his Pride have genuine claims turning the tables, having been in three of those games early - in fact the Lions led at 1/4 time in their two previous visits to Darley Park by 19 & 26 points.

The Lions have added a few soldiers to the cause ‘finding a way through’ Dan Jordan’s Devils, unbeaten in their last 20 BFNL games. 

Josh Guthrie (ankle) returns from a lengthy lay off to bolster the midfield while Hamish Pierce (North Melbourne VFL) fills the void across half back in the absence of Jack Hannett (Ocean Grove).

The mail is reigning Tony Lockett Medallist Jake Sutton will take his place despite relocating to Sydney and will lead a three pronged attack alongside Daniel Johnston and Pat Scanlon.

Given the VFL bye this week, Jake Egan (Essendon), Jake Lever (Essendon) and Pierce will be available for another crack at the Devils.

How Jordan and his crew manage ‘the hunted’ tag will be a season long reference point given rival teams have sought after list builds, to usurp the reigning premiers as the competition benchmark.

Scoop’s tip: Darley by 24 points

Melton host brow-raising Good Friday winners Bacchus Marsh in one of five bona fide cracking, Round 1 match ups.

While the Bloods have enjoyed a comfortable win/loss advantage over recent times, especially at MacPherson Park, what the Cobras delivered against perennial finalists East Point cannot be ignored.

Future star (if not already) Josh Huxtable may well be the Cobras’ best player, atop the deepest list at Armfield’s disposal in the infancy of his third year.

Experienced key big men Jake Owen and Luke Goetz look sharp, moving freely with a spring in their step, excited for what’s to come.

Bloods’ coach Troy Scoble would have, like many of his rival counterparts, been impressed with the Cobras who played with renewed flair, confidence and accountability capable of troubling any preconceived, superior opposition.

Sure, the jury is out on the credentials of East Point who have conceded a reset approach in 2026, but it was the was the nature of the Cobras’ 51-point win that would’ve provided Dennis Armfield’s group an invaluable boost in the belief space.

And the Cobras will need every bit of that to upset the Bloods who prepare to embark on a mission of their own after falling short in last year’s title defence.

The 2022 and 2024 premiers have lost a few soldiers ahead of their rebound assignment but welcome back underrated defender Riley Walker (year off) and crucial pair Jaycob Hickey and Lachie Watkins free from injury.

You could add Jordy Cotter, Jordy Kight and Ryan Davis to the return mix having endured similar setbacks and frustrations of their own.

Let’s not forget the challenges the Carters, the Kights and the Walkers present and the likelihood of speedster Kyle Borg revelling in one or more of his x-factor moments.

For what it’s worth, the hearsay will mean very little to a Cobras’ camp eager to take the next step - claiming another scalp on the road.

The reality is, Armfield’s men must overcome arguably the competitions most potent front six and a proven premiership defence to earn the spoils.

Big ask! - if the Cobras can reproduce their Good Friday appeal (no pun intended) they will give this more than a shake.

However, I’m leaning to a fresh Bloods outfit at home to hold sway in a seesawing affair.

Scoop’s tip: Melton by 18 points

With two draws head-to-head from their last three meetings and an off-season spruik of various proportions on both sides - anyone who adopts the theory “it’s only Round 1…”, is kidding themselves, when North Ballarat host Ballarat at Mars Stadium.

The race for a prized position in the top six is already underway with Bacchus Marsh staking their early claim on Good Friday.

Which of these two legitimate candidates will put their hands up come 5pm Saturday as the team to watch moving forward?

Let’s not forget it was Ballarat who replaced North Ballarat for a finals berth following the last round of the 2025 home and away season.

If one was to nitpick over their previous four meets, you’re likely to find “advantage North Ballarat” given their recent 2-0 record at Mars Stadium (26 pts and 82 pts). Alfredton Oval, the home of the Swans, played host to the two draws.

However, given the changing landscape in the off-season player movement space, both teams have added key top end talent to boost their finals credentials.

Almost a third of the 44 players to take the field will have VFL/AFL experience to heighten interest and intrigue levels even more heading into the bout.

While those in attendance will be spoilt for choice observing quality stocks, it’s the battle of the two spines that looms the deciding factor.

Roosters’ quintet Jai Lockett, Sam Glover, David Brinker-Ritchie (doubtful), Josh Morris and Denver Grainger-Barrass will ask questions of Swans’ big men Biggie Nyuon, Alex Keith, Rhys Perry and Patrick Graham.

Whether Brad Crouch, Thomas Simpson, Tristan Maple and co can impact at ground level and deny the Roosters will be worth the watch alone as they’re likely to welcome back Port Melbourne trio James Van Ess, Riley Polkinghorne and Josh Sparkman off the VFL bye.

And let’s not forget the x-factor capabilities of small forwards Jamie Quick (Roosters) and Andrew Hooper (Swans) who will pounce on anything that comes their way.

Difficult game to tip on spec given the changes and the impressive make-up of the two sides.

Will this game be won primarily in the air or on the ground/spread?

Efficiency and fitness levels will play defining roles how this game is run and won.

It’s a concern for the Roosters, Glover and Brinker- Ritchie (doubtful) have been relatively unsighted in the lead up practice matches but the broader collective have enough games in together and are at home to worry the Swans out of it in a close one.

Scoop’s tip: North Ballarat by 6 points

There is more than just the four premiership points at stake when the new look Lakers host Redan at CE Brown Reserve.

The winners will want a party and deservingly so.

What a relief it would be for either camp given the current landscape.

The Lakers have lost 18 games on the trot, won just four of their previous 50 games and are seemingly “chips in” to make an impression on the competition for patient mentor Rohan Brown who has been starved of success on the win front since his appointment in 2024.

On the other hand, Lions new coach Marc Greig is a well-respected footy person in his own right, once as a player, now as an educator of young men.

Greig’s task ahead of the weekend is overcoming the once “easy beats” of the competition as the Lakers list build rivals any in a very productive and exciting off season.

Up to five newbies at the Lakers boast VFL experience and according to one Ovens and Murray coach the two pickups from Wodonga namely Corey Rich and Will Fordham will prove a handful for any opposition.

That’s not including Louis Antonac who remains on Geelong’s VFL list.

Unfortunately, the return of former Werribee VFL listed talent Jake Lohmann (back) is on hold for at least another week.

Former Frankston VFL/Old Brighton wing/half back Alfie Jarnestrom (test - ankle) has also joined the club to consolidate the broader mission, adding further experience to a relatively fledgling group ready to grow and win games of football.

It’s thought the Lions have had their share of struggles in the off-season given the departed but the mail is, if Greigy is at the helm they’re surely to be well versed “standing up” when the going gets tough.

Unfortunately, on spec alone, with little or no sample size, the bar of expectation on the win/loss front for the Lions has been tempered to the point where this particular matchup is no longer a ‘should win’ game.

The availability of top end stocks Cooper Craig-Peters (Footscray VFL) and hamstrung Tom Berry (Southport Sharks VFL) would’ve given the Lions a major boost ahead of Saturday, but the Pride will have to find a way under Greig getting the job done without them.

I don’t want to put the ‘mozz’ on Redan but the weight of quality inclusions at the Lakers makes a compelling case that Brown will celebrate in song with his first win since round 18, 2024 – which ironically came against the Lions at this very venue.

Scoop’s tip: Lake Wendouree by 18 points

While East Point embrace the infancy of a “reset”, Sebastopol is not in a position to take the Kangas lightly when the two sides meet on Saturday night (6.15pm) at Marty Busch.

The Kangas’ top end provided enough ball for periods in their Good Friday loss to the slick Cobras in the first half, to be within a couple of goals at the main break before Dennis Armfield’s forecast improvers kicked away enroute to a comfortable win.

The Kangas should be better for the run after coach Joe Carmody had a good look into his relatively new group weighing up the strengths and focus areas for improvement.

Underrated midfielder Jesse Cairns (calf) is expected to return for the Kangas ahead of a belter Round 1 fixture for the BFNL.

Can’t wait to see the impact Burras’ key forward signing Joel Edwards can have working aerially in tandem with Cooper Littlehales and x-factor crumber Adam Forbes, stretching the Kangas defence.

Edwards is one of three off-season pick-ups for the Burra from GFL heavyweights St Joseph’s. Felix Henderson and Jeff Buckley have made the pilgrimage alongside Edwards, joining midfielder and former Burra club best and fairest Bailey Medwell who returns from a stint with Footscray VFL.

Experienced trio Tony Lockyer, Lachie Cassidy and Luke Kiel will be a tough assignment for Carmody to contain if the Burra get on a roll.

Young gun Jack Bambury will add further run and carry for Lockyer’s men in what looms a crucial game (already) in the club’s fortunes moving forward.

Mickijta Rotumah-Onus, Jackson Merrett, Jacob Brown, Joe Dodd and newly appointed Captain Liam Canny will lead the resistance for the Kangas, aiming to deny the Burra faithful a dream start to their 2026 campaign.

Round 2 Football Preview with 'Scoop'

A flurry of thrilling results from the start of the season sees Round 2 provide another valuable look at the BFNL's senior football competition this weekend.

Expect an invigorated Cobras outfit to relish the opportunity in front of home fans for the first time this season when they host the Roosters at Maddingley Park.

Dennis Armfield’s men are 2-0 having secured back-to-back wins on the road against two of last year’s finalists.

A six-month off-season can be a long time in local footy but the Cobras have started with a faultless campaign aided by the addition of no less than six players, four of whom are familiar returns while the acquisition of Zach Vesty (Hoppers Crossing) and Hugh Canning (Corowa) has only strengthened the Cobras’ version of their best 22.

Given injured pair Jamie Fulton (shoulder) and Jack Kovacevic (hand) remain sidelined short term, the future looks bright at Cobra land.

Not dissimilar to last year, the Roosters, under second year coach Clint Proctor have already endured all too familiar frustration with the unavailability of highly touted recruit David Brinker- Richie (knee soreness) who is expected to miss another week, and more importantly the critical match up with dominant Cobras ruckman Luke Goetz.

Nonetheless the Cobras cannot afford to underestimate the spine of the Roosters who arrive with the star power of Sam Glover, Josh Morris, Denver Grainger-Barrass and progressive talent Jai Lockett, all of whom have had an impact at VFL level.

Young 200cm tall Finn Russell and speedster Reggie Palmer are in the mix for a call up after the Roosters fell short in their season opener against Ballarat.

While spoilt for top end talent the Roosters will need to improve on last week to curb the Cobras impressive run and connection.

Armfield’s group are as fit as they’ve ever been under the former Carlton 145 gamer.

The point differential for the Cobras in second halves (111-49) and 4-0 record for second half quarters suggests the Roosters will need to bring their skates to deny the hosts a third win on the trot.

While Proctor’s Roosters failed in their two previous attempts in 2025 to down the Cobras, they do have the cattle both aerially and at ground level to upset the pattern.

Belief is an undervalued commodity; one the Cobras are embracing with aplomb early into the new season.

Over to the Roosters to find a way to curtail that growing momentum with some lasting impressions of their own.

Compliance to Proctor’s instructions is a non-negotiable if the visitors are any chance squaring their win loss ledger.

While Cobra fans need only wish for more of the same, to witness firsthand a 3-0 start would be all the more special.

Scoop’s tip: Bacchus Marsh by 12 points

The Swans host Sebastopol in the only game across the Round 2 senior football fixture involving two winners from the opening round.

While Sebastopol enjoyed a convincing win at their last visit to the nest, this assignment presents a different set of challengers for Tony Lockyer’s men.

A trio of experienced, 200cm trumpeter Swans will pose an afternoon long threat for the visitors to contain.

Alex Keith, Biggie Nyuon and Patrick Graham will have a large say in the Swans’ fortunes.

Given Keith’s intercept role across half back, compliance to Lockyer’s game plan will be a non-negotiable if the Burra are to find a way around the former Adelaide and Western Bulldog’s defender.

The Burra’s midfield can expect an early audit on their footy smarts given Biggie and Graham have the height advantage and athleticism to control the aerial contest.

Denying a formidable Swans midfield that is likely to include Tristan Maple, Thomas Simpson, Lewis Rinaldi and Fraser Perkins will test the Burra’s brains trust.

Any first use advantage out of stoppage will be significant for these two evenly matched teams at the source.

Unfortunately, recent Burra club best and fairest winners Lachie Cassidy and Bailey Medwell who play key midfield roles, are expected to miss another week.

In this case, it’s advantage Ballarat.

Swans’ second year coach Ash Baker has been busy with the enviable task of shifting the magnets with the freedom to find the right balance given all player types essentially are at his disposal.

On the flipside, if the Swans can be found out early despite the luxuries of the 200cm trio, finding the right balance becomes an ongoing challenge.

While the Swans take another step finding the best version of themselves, the Burra are not dissimilar despite a couple of key figures on the sidelines.

The addition of GFL trio Jack Buckley, Felix Henderson and Joel Edwards is significant - each played an encouraging role in the Burra’s first up win over East Point.

Lockyer will hope for further improvement, a must you would think if the Burra are to secure the premiership points.

Baker on the other hand, would be the first to concede his bevy were ‘ordinary’ at their previous meet against the Burra but pose a completely different proposition in the here and now.

Yes, plenty has gone under the bridge since their last meet and with more games together, expect the Swans to resemble a force to be reckoned with.

No Cassidy or Medwell for the Burra moves the needle in favour of the Swans for one the picks of the round in BFNL action.

Scoop’s tip: Ballarat by 10 points

New season Redan coach Marc Greig gets a ‘throw at the stumps’ opportunity to upset league heavyweights Sunbury when they host the Lions of the East at City Oval.

Redan’s relocation for the interim, comes on the back of renovations now in full swing at City Oval.

Greig’s eclectic group surprised a few with the nature of their 92-point demolition job over the Lakers in Round 1 booting ‘the sweep’ (highest score), some 12 goals more than any other club across the BFNL.

That stat alone will have drawn interest from Sunbury coach Matty White following their agonising two-point loss to Darley in the much-anticipated Grand Final replay.

Sunbury haven’t always had their way on the win/loss front up the highway but their four home and away season wins from six trips last year suggests the mental demons have subsided on the back of instilled belief and collective buy-in.

Under White, Sunbury are the genuine real deal having won seven of their last 10 BFNL games.

Only Darley has beaten them (three times) over the period.

White would be the first to concede some, if not all of his boys were sore after their first up outing given the physicality of the affair.

Redan’s case may well be different following their big win, with the occasion running a majority of the group into some early season form.

If Greig’s Lions can hit the ground running and give Whitey’s Pride something to chase, this matchup could get interesting.

The Bond boys will stretch the Sunbury defence ONLY IF the Redan midfield can have their way against a deep Sunbury core led by reigning Henderson Medallist Jake Egan and more experienced Josh Guthrie.

Sunbury’s midfield will want to make their presence felt early providing some ‘good looks’ of their own for key targets Daniel Johnston and Phil Scanlon.

Sure, their mid-forward connection remains a work in progress when Jake Sutton doesn’t play but you can’t discount their ability to score.

Redan must deny Sunbury at the source and win the “ground ball” battle to be any chance of an upset win but on the small sample size alone, who knows what they’re capable of.

Fond memories should aid a favourable result for Whitey’s Pride but they will be made to earn it if Greig’s Lions can build on their Round 1 heroics.

Scoop’s tip: Sunbury by 30 points

Having overcome a major scare in the season opener, the Devils’ next assignment against the Kangas should be a little more comfortable despite the road trip to Eastern Oval.

The Kangas take another step forward in their rebuild against the competition’s benchmark and should embrace the challenge with plenty of learnings to be drawn from the hit out.

East Point coach Joe Carmody and his staff will have other priorities than the scoreboard given their slim chances of an upset were dealt a severe blow following the confirmation of a hamstring injury to Jacob Brown that is expected to sideline the star utility for a couple of weeks.

The midfield battle however will be relatively familiar to both camps with the core of Kangas’ experienced mids including Mickijta Rotumah-Onus, Joe Dodd and Liam Canny up against gun trio Brett Bewley, Nick Hind and Luther Baker.

Unfortunately (midfield aside) the inexperience of the Kangas is likely to surface at some time and reflect for periods on the scoreboard given up to eight of Carmody’s fledgling group have played less than 10 senior games.

Devils’ clutch defender Billy Myers will welcome the absence of Brown, paving the way for a more offensive role if coach Dan Jordan sees fit, raising the degrees of difficulty for Carmody to contain.

Not to mention the likely return of Mikey Edwards from an eye complaint suffered in the Devils’ 12-point practice match win over GFL club Leopold.

Weather permitting, expect the Devils to hit the scoreboard in waves despite the resistance of a predominantly young group, keen to make an impression.

While Kangas’ forward pair Jack Jeffrey and Jarrod Joyce will keep the frugal Devils defence honest, the visitors look to have too much firepower across the ground to be denied a 22nd BFNL win on the trot.

Scoop’s tip: Darley

After disappointing losses for both sides in the season opener, you can bank on some early heat when the Lakers host Melton at CE Brown Reserve.

Let’s be honest, the Lakers owe their fans more than what was dished up against Redan in Round 1, a 92-point thrashing.

Yes, the Lakers have lost their last 19 BFNL games but given the off-season additions, Rohan Brown’s boys fell well short on external and (surely) internal expectation.

While the Bloods assignment looms tougher again for the Lakers they should not fear Troy Scoble’s visiting party.

Why might you ask?

Since Round 6 last year the once invincible Bloods have lost to every team in the BFNL bar North Ballarat and the Lakers (draw v Ballarat).

The 2024 Premiers (18-1) have less than a 50%-win record from their last 14 home and away games (6.5/7.5) and need a spark albeit being just Round 2.

A trip to CE Brown Reserve is the last dress rehearsal for Scoble ahead of blockbuster meetings with Sunbury (A) and Darley (H).

The Bloods will look to exceed KPI numbers in a number of areas, none more so than goal conversion that has cost them some close ones in recent times.

Highly decorated x-factor forward and proud leader Braedan Kight returns to bolster the mission.

The 2024 Tony Lockett Medallist (3.1) and Sunbury sharpshooter Jake Sutton (3.6) are the only two players in the BFNL to average more than three goals per game from their last 50 outings.

While an historic win for the Lakers is highly unlikely, Brown will be demanding an immediate response from his boys so used to the underdogs tag.

Genuine top end quality has been added to the Lakers list capable of matching any side for periods.

Fingers crossed we bear witness to that and the Lakers Round 1 debacle is looked upon in hindsight as a forgiven run.

On the flipside, look for the Bloods to make a statement of their own.

IN A NUTSHELL

Experienced Lions’ big guns stole the show with midfielder Lachie George named best afield and Grant Bell finishing with a game high five goals.

Reigning Club best and fairest and rising star Isaac Grant joined in bagging four majors while Jack Fitzpatrick's Lakers could manage just one of their own for the entire afternoon coming via the boot of Nathan Pring.

Learmonth and Lions fans would have been all smiles over the Easter weekend before a birds-eye view opportunity, scoping future opponents presents at the conclusion of round one matches this coming Saturday.
