Netball Weekend Preview - Round 9, 2026

Another huge round of BFNL A Grade Netball awaits, with last round once again highlighting just how even the competition is across the ladder.

North Ballarat, Darley and Lake Wendouree continue to set the benchmark at the top, while Sunbury, Sebastopol and Ballarat remain firmly in the finals hunt. East Point also showed real grit in another tight finish, while Bacchus Marsh, Redan and Melton are all searching for consistency as the season moves toward its business end, where every quarter and every turnover begins to matter more.

In Form: North Ballarat, Lake Wendouree

Building: Sunbury, Sebastopol

Seeking Response: Darley, Ballarat, Bacchus Marsh, Redan, Melton

Wildcard: East Point

Ballarat

vs

Darley

SATURDAY JUNE 16TH - 2.30PM @ ALFREDTON RESERVE

Momentum: Darley

Darley were competitive in their 45–40 loss to North Ballarat, winning the third quarter and lifting their intensity after a slow start. However, North Ballarat’s early 12–7 first quarter proved decisive. Olivia Cawthray was well contained, with North’s defenders applying strong and sustained pressure.

Ballarat were involved in a high-scoring contest against Sunbury, going into half time level after a strong second-quarter response. Dakota Blade was outstanding in the goal circle, opening the game with a 17-goal burst at 100% accuracy and keeping Ballarat in the contest deep into the second half.

Key Match-Up

  • Xara Burge vs Darley’s defensive pressure and midcourt contest

What to Watch

  • Darley’s response after a narrow loss to a top-tier opponent
  • Ballarat’s ability to maintain scoring consistency for four quarters
  • Midcourt turnover battle shaping attacking opportunities

Redan

vs

Melton

SATURDAY JUNE 16TH - 2.30PM @ CITY OVAL

Momentum: Redan

Redan pushed East Point in a tight 33–30 contest last week, starting strongly with a 9–5 opening quarter before the game tightened into a defensive battle. Their ability to stay in the contest was again evident, with strong pressure maintained across all four quarters.

Ashlee Smith was excellent in goal defence, consistently disrupting East Point’s attacking flow, while Redan’s attacking unit lifted in patches to close the margin late after the injection of extra attacking options.

Melton were beaten by Sebastopol 52–38, struggling to match their opponent’s early intensity. Despite effort through the midcourt, they found it difficult to contain Sebastopol’s goalers and struggled to generate consistent attacking flow under pressure.

Key Match-Up

  • Redan defensive pressure vs Melton’s transitional ball movement

What to Watch

  • Redan’s ability to convert defensive pressure into scoreboard impact
  • Melton’s ball security under sustained defensive pressure
  • Midcourt battle for territory and momentum swings

Prediction

Redan’s defensive intensity and pressure across the court should see them take this one.

Sunbury

vs

East Point

SATURDAY JUNE 16TH - 2.30PM @ CLARKE OVAL

Momentum: Sunbury

Sunbury came through a tight contest against Ballarat, starting strongly with a 15–10 first quarter before being pegged back at half time. Their ability to adjust structurally and finish strongly again proved decisive, with late momentum swinging their way in the final quarter. However, a significant injury to Eliza Gollant late in the game slightly disrupted their ability to fully consolidate the win.

East Point held on for a narrow 33–30 win over Redan in another defensive battle. They gradually worked their way into the contest, with the injection of Evie Rooney into goals proving influential as she helped close the margin after Redan’s fast start. Isabella Stevens provided composure and control through midcourt, helping East Point stay within striking distance before finishing strongly.

Key Match-Up

  • Sunbury midcourt speed vs East Point defensive pressure and structure

What to Watch

  • East Point’s ability to generate turnover opportunities
  • Sunbury’s shooting efficiency under physical defensive pressure
  • Midcourt transition speed and centre pass conversion rates

Prediction

Sunbury’s depth, adaptability, and ability to adjust in-game should get them over the line.

Sebastopol

vs

Bacchus Marsh

SATURDAY JUNE 16TH - 2.30PM @ MARTY BUSCH RESERVE

Momentum: Sebastopol

Sebastopol produced a dominant start in their 52–38 win over Melton, controlling the game at both ends of the court. Adut Manyiel was a strong and reliable target in goals, while Alice Kain led the defensive end with composure, structure, and intercept timing.

Bacchus Marsh went down to Lake Wendouree 50–35. They were competitive in patches but struggled to sustain momentum across four quarters, particularly when under prolonged defensive pressure. They will be sure to come out and make an impact this week, looking to move up in positions

Key Match-Up

  • Adut Manyiel vs Bacchus Marsh defensive circle

What to Watch

  • Sebastopol’s ability to start games with early scoreboard pressure
  • Bacchus Marsh’s consistency through the midcourt transitions
  • Whether Bacchus Marsh can limit second-phase scoring opportunities

Prediction

Sebastopol’s structure, defensive control, and scoring power should see them comfortably in control.

Lake Wendouree

vs

North Ballarat

SATURDAY JUNE 16TH - 2.30PM @ C.E BROWN RESERVE

Momentum: North Ballarat

This is the standout clash of the round after North Ballarat defeated Darley 45–40 in Round 8 in a high-quality top-of-the-table battle. They set the tone early, leading 12–7 at quarter time, with relentless defensive pressure making it difficult for Darley to find clean ball into attack.

Maggie Smith was outstanding in goal defence, constantly disrupting space and shutting down feeding options, while Maddy Selmon was clinical in attack with 34 goals at 94% accuracy.

Lake Wendouree also come in strong after another composed win, with Sadie Cheeseman dictating play through the centre and driving their transition game. Their connection into the goal circle continues to be a feature, with strong finishing around the post allowing them to post another commanding score.

Lake Wendouree’s ability to control tempo and move the ball cleanly through midcourt will be crucial here, especially against North Ballarat’s disciplined defensive unit.

Key Match-Up

  • Sadie Cheeseman vs North Ballarat’s midcourt defensive pressure

What to Watch

  • North Ballarat’s ability to restrict clean ball into the circle
  • Lake Wendouree’s transition speed against elite defensive pressure
  • Whether either side can break open the game in centre pass streaks

Prediction

A top-of-the-table arm wrestle expected, but North Ballarat’s defensive system and ability to force turnovers gives them a narrow edge.

Round 9 shapes as another crucial step in the BFNL A Grade season, headlined by the top-of-the-table clash between North Ballarat and Lake Wendouree. Darley will be eager to respond against Ballarat after a narrow defeat, while Sebastopol will look to continue their strong momentum against Bacchus Marsh.

With finals positioning tightening each week, every contest is becoming increasingly significant. The margin for error is shrinking, and consistency is now the key separating contenders from challengers as the season pushes deeper into its defining stretch.
