Tayla Honey in GD was unstoppable, using her ability to tip, create turnovers and control the transition out of defence. At the attacking end, Caitlin Hill was Sunbury’s key target, shooting 36 goals and providing consistency across each quarter.

East Point remained competitive in both the opening and final quarters, but accuracy proved a deciding factor. They created plenty of opportunities but, under pressure, were unable to consistently convert them into goals. Grace Rogers worked hard in the circle defence, continuing to hunt the ball and execute when opportunities presented.

Melton 24 lost to Redan 68

Redan’s winning edge was their ability to come home strongly and take control in every quarter. Kirsten Andrich was a standout in GD, adding strength to the defensive circle and making it difficult for Melton’s goalers to receive clean ball.

East Point produced their most dominant performance of the season with a comprehensive victory over Melton. Evie Rooney was outstanding, shooting 45 goals at 90 per cent accuracy, while Stella Geljon and Rhiannon White formed an imposing defensive combination that proved extremely difficult to penetrate.

Redan faced another difficult challenge against Darley but continued to work hard throughout the contest. Eva Manserra remained a strong target in attack and will again play a critical role if Redan are to challenge East Point.

Round 8 shapes as one of the most intriguing and potentially defining weekends of the season. The blockbuster clash between North Ballarat and Darley headlines a round filled with important contests across the ladder, while the battle between Lake Wendouree and Bacchus Marsh could prove pivotal in the race for finals.

With teams beginning to establish their position heading into the second half of the year, every win becomes increasingly valuable. Expect another weekend of high-quality netball as clubs continue their push towards September.

Another huge round of BFNL A Grade Netball awaits, with last round once again highlighting just how even the competition is across the ladder.

North Ballarat, Darley and Lake Wendouree continue to set the benchmark at the top, while Sunbury, Sebastopol and Ballarat remain firmly in the finals hunt. East Point also showed real grit in another tight finish, while Bacchus Marsh, Redan and Melton are all searching for consistency as the season moves toward its business end, where every quarter and every turnover begins to matter more.

Darley were competitive in their 45–40 loss to North Ballarat, winning the third quarter and lifting their intensity after a slow start. However, North Ballarat’s early 12–7 first quarter proved decisive. Olivia Cawthray was well contained, with North’s defenders applying strong and sustained pressure.

Ballarat were involved in a high-scoring contest against Sunbury, going into half time level after a strong second-quarter response. Dakota Blade was outstanding in the goal circle, opening the game with a 17-goal burst at 100% accuracy and keeping Ballarat in the contest deep into the second half.

Redan pushed East Point in a tight 33–30 contest last week, starting strongly with a 9–5 opening quarter before the game tightened into a defensive battle. Their ability to stay in the contest was again evident, with strong pressure maintained across all four quarters.

Ashlee Smith was excellent in goal defence, consistently disrupting East Point’s attacking flow, while Redan’s attacking unit lifted in patches to close the margin late after the injection of extra attacking options.

Melton were beaten by Sebastopol 52–38, struggling to match their opponent’s early intensity. Despite effort through the midcourt, they found it difficult to contain Sebastopol’s goalers and struggled to generate consistent attacking flow under pressure.

Their ability to adjust structurally and finish strongly again proved decisive, with late momentum swinging their way in the final quarter. However, a significant injury to Eliza Gollant late in the game slightly disrupted their ability to fully consolidate the win.

East Point held on for a narrow 33–30 win over Redan in another defensive battle. They gradually worked their way into the contest, with the injection of Evie Rooney into goals proving influential as she helped close the margin after Redan’s fast start. Isabella Stevens provided composure and control through midcourt, helping East Point stay within striking distance before finishing strongly.

Bacchus Marsh went down to Lake Wendouree 50–35. They were competitive in patches but struggled to sustain momentum across four quarters, particularly when under prolonged defensive pressure. They will be sure to come out and make an impact this week, looking to move up in positions

This is the standout clash of the round after North Ballarat defeated Darley 45–40 in Round 8 in a high-quality top-of-the-table battle. They set the tone early, leading 12–7 at quarter time, with relentless defensive pressure making it difficult for Darley to find clean ball into attack.

Maggie Smith was outstanding in goal defence, constantly disrupting space and shutting down feeding options, while Maddy Selmon was clinical in attack with 34 goals at 94% accuracy.

Lake Wendouree also come in strong after another composed win, with Sadie Cheeseman dictating play through the centre and driving their transition game. Their connection into the goal circle continues to be a feature, with strong finishing around the post allowing them to post another commanding score.

Lake Wendouree’s ability to control tempo and move the ball cleanly through midcourt will be crucial here, especially against North Ballarat’s disciplined defensive unit.

Round 9 shapes as another crucial step in the BFNL A Grade season, headlined by the top-of-the-table clash between North Ballarat and Lake Wendouree. Darley will be eager to respond against Ballarat after a narrow defeat, while Sebastopol will look to continue their strong momentum against Bacchus Marsh.

With finals positioning tightening each week, every contest is becoming increasingly significant. The margin for error is shrinking, and consistency is now the key separating contenders from challengers as the season pushes deeper into its defining stretch.

There have been some big changes of personnel at Bacchus Marsh and the Cobras are looking fit and ready to go for Season 2021. In this next instalment of the 2021 Season Previews, Scoop is backing the chorus that expects to see some big improvement from the Cobras under new playing coach Tom German.

Bacchus Marsh

Scoop’s 2021 prediction: 5th - 7th

EXPECT Bacchus Marsh to be one of the big improvers in 2021. New playing coach Tom German has targeted specific player types that will benefit the Cobras both on and off the field.

"I'm all about [club] overall improvement," German said.

The 30-year-old midfielder brings the cream of the crop with him from his former club Mansfield in the Goulburn Valley League.

Ryan Bartlett (playing assistant coach - key back), Lachlan Christopher (halfback/mid), Jackson Kirley (small forward/back), and Josh Martin (ruck) join German's former teammate Bryce Carroll (Keilor Park) as the new faces at Cobra land. When you include the six-foot-six frame of Jake Owen's brother Jaidyn into the mix, having crossed over from Gisborne, there are genuine reasons for Cobra fans to get excited.

Dangerous forward duo Jake Owen and Aaron Willetts can eye similar goal returns of 2018 with the midfield skill injection. German is the prime example, having led the 2019 Goulburn Valley's League Medal count after seven rounds before a broken hand cruelled his chances. Christopher, too is a highly skilled acquisition, while ball magnet Nick Stuhldreier and Harrison King will look to improve their efficiency by foot into the forward 50 and take their own game(s) to the next level. They are both more than capable.

This new voice at Maddingley Park, however, is on a mission.

"We've recruited structural players that will fill the voids of 2019 and allow us to execute a game style around," German said.

"We'll be fit and striving for consistency."

Cobra fans will be rapt to hear help has arrived for tireless ruckman Daniel Burton. Josh Martin is training solidly and is likely to assume part of the ruck duties and could take the lead role if Burton's work commitments (fire brigade) result in his absence. Potential star Harry King should be primed for a breakout season, reaping reward from his pre-season buy-in.

While a favourable draw on previous seasons awaits the Cobras in 2021, any finals berth would be considered a 'tick' in my book. The Cobras, however, have even bigger goals on their agenda than just Week One of the finals. Good luck to them.

Groom to be Jake Owen plus wedding guests (brother Jayden, plus two more likely) will miss the Cobras Round 11 clash with Sebastopol on July 3, just when things start to heat up.

The Cobras have lost Liam Mullen (HFNL), Matt Chisari (WRFL), Thomas Brownbridge (WRFL), Jakob DeWinter (ODFA) and Jacob Chisari (retired) since season's end 2019.

With Brendan McCartney at the helm, a crop of thriving young kids and some of their x-factor players returning from injury North Ballarat’s 2021 outlook is difficult to predict, leaving destiny in their own hands.

Scoop: Macca, great to see you going around again at North Ballarat. Have you reassessed your approach to this season given your boys fell away at the back end of 2022 losing 5 of the last 7 games?

Brendan McCartney: We had a tough draw and played four teams coming off the bye I reckon. We were in all games bar a couple into the last quarter but if I had to pinpoint, it was more our polish than anything.

S: Stewart Crameri is a better than handy pick-up. How's he travelling and what role have you earmarked for him in his first year at the Roosters?

BM: 'Stewie' is a very good footy person and positive role model for our young group. His role will be forward/mid as well as a bit of forward coaching. With 100 games under his belt at the top level, 'Stewie' has lots to offer.

S: Your Under 19s won the flag last year. Can we expect those boys to fill the void left by the exit of a handful of depth players in the off-season?

BM: Definitely. They're fit, strong young men who have been training with us for the last two seasons. We're hopeful of seeing the benefits of the club’s (youth) plan this year.

S: The group didn't have much luck with injury last year – how are Josh Chatfield (knee), Tom Hotchin (acl), Joey Symonds (concussion) and Elliot lamb (shoulder) progressing?

BM: Josh (Chatfield) is with us at the moment but will return to Footscray VFL at some point. Travis (Hotchin) is coming off a 12 month ACL - expect early season return, won't be rushed. Elliot (Lamb) is on track for Round 1. Joey (Symonds) is being monitored - he's still having up and down days but we're hopeful - again, won't be rushed.

S: On a broader scale, what are you enjoying most in your time in the BFNL? To the eye, is footy in the region in a good place?

BM: Seems to be. I'm loving the competitive nature and evenness of our competition primarily but I’m confused by the number of players who are willing to leave clubs for a lower standard of footy. Some of these blokes are being lost too early to good standard local footy. Go later I say, I don't understand it.

S: What are some of the identified strengths of the club?

BM: We’re a young group who embrace training. We're quicker and have 'more legs' than last year.

S: Where do you expect to see your projected improvement come from?

BM: More run and aggressive ball movement going forward. The Crameri correction will straighten us up providing a target. We were a bit slow moving the footy last year.

S: How has pre-season training looked?

BM: Going pretty well mate. Like most clubs you have your up and down nights but on the whole definitely a tick I’d say.

S: Who do you expect to be the biggest improvers this year? (Outside of your club)

BM: Sunbury.

S: Who is your flag tip? (Outside of your club)

BM: Sebastopol, they’ll be hard to beat.

Scoop's North Ballarat prediction: 3rd - 6th

With the 2025 season on the horizon, Scoop has caught up with all our senior footy coaches as we build towards an epic Round 1!

North Ballarat are set for a new era under new coach Clint Proctor, and there is plenty to be excited about for the Roosters.

SCOOP: Clint, welcome into the BFNL coaching ranks, tell us about your recent time in footy and how you managed to land the job at North Ballarat?

CLINT PROCTOR: Most recently the Box Hill VFL senior coach in 2022. I have had two years away from the game to concentrate on my young family. I'm originally from Gippsland and have always had a love for regional footy. My work has taken me to the Ballarat region and by opportunity the North Ballarat position just sprung up. They're a great club, and I’m looking forward to what lays ahead for all involved. 

S: No doubt you've done your due diligence over your short time in the role - where do you think North Ballarat are at?

CP: Young list post some retirements. To be honest, given my short time in the role I’m not entirely sure where we're at but I’m confident our brand of footy will stand up. There are a lot of moving parts in the program with VFL affiliated players but it's exciting to see them all get exposure at the level.

S: Former coach Brendan McCartney had an emphasis on a contested brand of footy - "step in when it's your time to go". What style of footy can we expect to see from North Ballarat this year?

CP: We won't be moving away from that. We'll endeavour to remain tough with an eye toward adding some different avenues to score and ultimately stay in as many games as we can.

S: The club has had a tough run with injuries to key players of late - can you update us on those on how they're travelling?

CP: Jamie Quick (foot- modified program), Riley Polkinghorne (shoulder surgery - modified program), Harry Loader (foot - modified program). Ryan Hobbs (soft tissue has retired) and Joey Symonds (concussion also retired).

S: The club won six of its nine games at home last year - is wanting a similar win-loss record this year out of a relatively young group too much to ask?

CP: It's difficult to put a ceiling on our program, there are so many moving parts. For example, VFL affiliated available talent and injury. However, we can work hard to make sure it's difficult for any team when they enter Mars Stadium.

S: What do you know about the competition - rival clubs/opposition players etc?

CP: Tough competition with some serious top end talent fresh out of the AFL and VFL programs.

S: Winning 'away' is always tough for a young group - last year just wins over Melton South, Bacchus Marsh, Redan and a draw against Ballarat. How do you go about channelling energy to get results away from home?

CP: That's an interesting angle. However, if we play the way we want to play we will be in enough games to win anywhere. I'm confident our brand will hold up pending execution and availability.

S: Macca gave Riley Polkinghorne, Josh Sparkman, Hugh Trigg and Malachi White an opportunity with Port Melbourne over the Summer. How's their progress, are we likely to see them in North Ballarat colours this year?

CP: Well they've all signed with Port Melbourne but remain affiliated with us, and have stayed connected with our group. So, if/when available at club level they're sure to be better players for their experience at VFL level and will surely play a significant role for us.

With Round 1 fast approaching, Scoop has caught up with all ten senior footy coaches as they prepare for season 2026!

North Ballarat are tipped to be one of the risers this season, how does Clint Proctor survey the standings ahead of the April action?

SCOOP: Externally the vibe is North Ballarat has the potential to challenge for the title in 2026. How much improvement is needed to validate the call given you missed last year’s top six in a 10-team competition?

CLINT PROCTOR: Internally we know where our improvements must come from and we have made some strategic decisions to enable the growth. Health is our no focus this year and we have made some steps in the right direction with our list management decisions. Having eight VFL listed players put us as a paper team last year - rarely did we have that cohort together. This was new for North and something we have now adjusted moving down to only four so I’m anticipating this helping with our connection as a team

S: I was rapt to hear Josh Morris won your Best and Fairest after being overlooked in the BFNL Team of the Year. Josh is a versatile talent - what is his best position to help win games of footy?

CP: Josh is an outstanding player and has the ability to influence the game in most positions of the field - we will employ him where the team needs a lift but predominately he will play down back this year.

S: Sam Glover returns full time from Collingwood VFL. Surely still in his prime we can expect big things from the silky moving left footer?

CP: It’s so great to have Sam as part of the crew - he’s made a huge impact in a short time on the track. I’m really looking forward to coaching him, he’s such a professional there’s no doubt he will have a big year.

S: Tell us about newcomer David Brinker-Ritchie, a 200cm ruckman from the SANFL and the returning Jai Lockett who left for Southport VFL still essentially a kid a couple of years ago…

CP: I coached DBR at Box Hill - incredible lad, humble and a real team man you won’t miss him.  Jye is a local North junior and has a great connection to the boys in the team - we are excited to see him kick some goals for us this year.

S: Josh Sparkman, Jamie Quick, the Loader brothers, Tom Bromley-Lynch and Brock Leonard have all missed significant footy with injury - are they all ready to go? 

CP: Harry Loader hasn’t made the adjustment, he won’t feature this year and Sparkman is a VFL listed player along with Riley, Van Es and Riding so we haven’t included those lads in our planning for this year. If they are available after VFL selection then that’s a bonus for us.

Quicky, TBL and fletcher haven’t missed a beat this year - last year they couldn’t get on the park, I’m really happy to see them all smiling and training pain free.

Brock is back training well and working on some technique adjustments to help with his ball gathers to prevent any head high knocks in the future across the league.

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT

CP: Conversion - our inability to score well consistently and apply scoreboard pressure was not at the level required to challenge week in week out.

We also must improve our contested possession to support our ball  movement and time in forward half.

Astute mentor Clint Proctor has shopped well over the off season boasting a spine to rival any opposition in 2026.

The return of Sam Glover, Jye Lockett and addition of 200cm former SANFL ruckman David Brinker-Ritchie will ensure an ominous presence both around stoppage and forward of the ball. When you include a fit Jamie Quick into the front half the Roosters’ best 10-12 read impressively given Denver Grainger- Barras (full time) and Josh Morris will likely hold down key posts at the defensive end.

While the top end nature of the Roosters’ spine cannot be questioned the jury is out on whether their complement of spread players will hold up enough to challenge the cream of the competition. Let’s not forget the Roosters did miss finals last year but look for them to bounce well enough to give Proctor his first crack amid the September action in his second season at the helm.

There is just seventeen days to go until the start of the 2021 McDonald's Ballarat FNL season and Scoop is rolling out club-by-club predictions for the season ahead. We start with a look at recent cellar-dwellers, Melton South, where there is an air of optimism on the back of some quality acquisitions.

Melton South

EXPECT Melton South to test any side that doesn't turn up to play in 2020, after the perennial wooden spooner of recent times (2016, 2018, 2019) secured the prized signatures of two bona fide A-Graders in the off-season(s).

The acquisition of former Port Melbourne forward Dylan Conway and ex-Footscray VFL player Bradley Olsson has given coach Heath Pritchard and the Panthers army something to look forward to.

"We're rapt to have these guys at the club full-time in 2021," Pritchard said.

"None of this part-time business.

"This crew, along with Shaun Wyatt (Bairnsdale, Williamstown, Footscray VFL), Billy Lloyd (Port Melbourne VFL/St Kevins), Daniel Walker (Melton), Michael Callus (Melton Central), and Aaron Clarke (Coburg VFL) will provide the structure we've been lacking," he said.

Conway (forward) at 29 years-old and Olsson (6’3 mid) at 25 years-old, are two proven pickups that would rival any clubs in the off-season. Add the aforementioned Williamstown and Footscray VFL prodigy Shaun Wyatt (mid-forward), Billy Lloyd (mid/forward), Melton Bloods Daniel Walker (6’1 utility), Michael Callus (2^nd in the 2019 B&F, small pressure forward) and young gun Aaron Clarke (key forward) to the Panthers mix and you would be a fool to deny them natural improvement.

The new signings have prompted a welcoming spark on the training track, with numbers pushing 40 at times this far out.

"The (new) boys’ presence around the place has been first class, they haven't missed a beat," Pritchard said.

"There's no ceiling on the follow-on effect it will have on the young blokes we've gotten games into over the last couple of years."

Despite the Panthers losing 2019 B&F and former Carlton defender Paul Bower (WAFL) and former VFL listed player Lachlan Watkins (Melton), arguably their biggest loss will be star midfielder Shannen Lange who has penned his intentions of a return to Sale for work. Lange finished equal fourth in the 2019 VFL equivalent of the Brownlow Medal, the J.J Liston Trophy, while with Port Melbourne.

There's no doubting Pritchard's Panthers will be much more competitive in 2021. The 43-year-old coach, who enters his second full season in charge, was at his diplomatic best in response to any thoughts of a spike up the ladder.

"We'll welcome our challenges at the selection table that's for sure," he said.

"Everyone will be earning their spot.

"After all, we're not here to make up the numbers.”
