INSIDER: Firstly, welcome to the BFNL, what do you know about the competition?

RYE PENNY:Not too much. I went to Bacchus Marsh Grammar and heard a bit about it there, but I expect it to be similar to the Bendigo League.

INSIDER: You're a Collingwood VFL listed player formerly aligned with Gisborne, how did u end up at the Cobras?

RP:Well I have mates here from my school days and Dennis' appointment pretty much got me over the line given he's great mates with Josh Fraser (Collingwood VFL Coach).

INSIDER: Tell us about your experience thus far at Collingwood, are you in the mix for regular selection?

RP:I've played four games as a 23rd man for the Pies and loved it. Selection is tough this year, only five or six listed VFL players are getting an opportunity each week. I'll just have to wait for my opportunity and hopefully I can take it.

INSIDER: The club signed Dennis Armfield to coach the Cobras - tell us about him?

RP:Dennis has been awesome. I've had heaps of coaches over the last few years and for some reason it feels he's a level above. Dennis is really passionate about the club with an emphasis on wanting to make people better.

INSIDER: Name two top priorities the Cobras need to return to finals?

RP:1. Persevere with youth involvement, there is plenty of talent around here. 2. Aggression, will compete.

INSIDER: Who is your harshest footy critic?

RP:Mum! If I don't have 40 possessions and take a couple of hangers, she is in to me!

INSIDER: What other sport could you play at a high level if there were no footy?

RP:Volleyball (played in National league)

INSIDER: In a freakish sense, which player at the club can do things on-field that others can't?

RP:Luke Goetz

INSIDER: Who at the club has the most upside from a junior perspective?

RP:Definitely, Joel Freeman.

RP:Spence Jenks!

INSIDER: Which player (by foot) is the most skilled on their opposite side?

RP:Jack Kovacevic

INSIDER: Who is your favorite footy person at the club?

RP:Shannon Nixon

INSIDER: What's your favorite TV series or Movie at the moment?

RP:Not enough time for that stuff really, I didn't mind the Avatar movies.

INSIDER: Apart from your phone, what can't you leave home without?

RP:Four pairs of clothes because I never really know where I’m going to end up!

INSIDER: Which player would be the last person you'd want to share a room with on a footy trip?

RP:Joel Freeman

INSIDER: If you had to cook for the whole club what would be your signature dish of approval?

RP:Burritos

INSIDER: Who at the club would most likely win a million dollars on a quiz show?

RP:Isaac Nixon

INSIDER: Favorite AFL club and player?

RP:Collingwood, Oleg Markov - I’m trying to emulate my game on his.

INSIDER: If you could add one player to the Cobras list given your time spent in the Bendigo FNL, who would you pick?

RP:Lachie Tardew (Sandhurst midfielder)

INSIDER KNOWLEDGE - In his draft year Penny topped the field in the standing vertical jump and running vertical jump as well as the 20m sprint. Penny's 89cm on the standing vertical jump equaled the all-time combine record set by Aidan Bonar at the 2017 NAB AFL Draft combine.

INSIDER: Congratulations on the journey so far, mate. Win/loss aside, it's been a tough year for the club. What has a spot in the grand final done for the morale of the Bloods’ family?

TROY SCOBLE: The challenges experienced galvanize and strengthen our connection. Provides genuine feedback to us all that we have a unique environment with genuine people.

INSIDER: Do you think the current playing group is undervalued or underappreciated more broadly given their impeccable win/loss record dating back as far as 2018?

TS: Absolutely. The numbers don’t lie on the group’s performance this home and away season. The acknowledgement or lack thereof is not our concern, seeking external acknowledgement has never been a goal.

INSIDER: If so, should the covid epidemic take some responsibility for us missing out on the Bloods’ full potential through 2020-21?

TS: Great question. The age profile of the group may suggest they lost some opportunities. However, there are other teams over the period that would have felt the same.

INSIDER: You're harder to play against in 2024 – what is the reason behind that? You could look at percentage, depth, maturity of talent, system, anything else?

TS: Combination of all but system, development and trust in the list is the reason. Talent has no influence.

INSIDER: Scoreboard aside, what's the one stat you'd like to win today?

TS: Pressure rating

INSIDER: What is your #1 non-negotiable asked of the players each week?

TS: Know your role, play your role.

INSIDER: Playing group aside, is there another battle going on on-field between coaches - are some harder to play against than others - do some work out your theories better than others where you need to adapt on the run?

TS: There is. Love the challenge. Some terrific coaches in the competition that challenge your coaches’ box, and you build your learning when you coach against them.

INSIDER: It must've been a proud moment seeing both of your boys Max and Chase play senior footy together... how was that reality for you?

TS: As a coach, love seeing players earn opportunities. As a parent, a thrill for our family. Also being a part of five sets of brothers playing in a game is a great memory for them.

INSIDER: Who is your harshest critic?

TS: My wife, Michelle!

INSIDER: Favorite BFNL ground away from MacPherson Park?

TS: Darley Park

INSIDER: What other sport could you coach at a high level if there were no footy?

TS: One trick wonder. None.

INSIDER: In a freakish sense, which player at the club can do things on-field that others can't?

TS: Lachie Phillips

INSIDER: Who at the club has the most upside from a junior perspective?

TS: Blood’s bank is full - too many to individualize!

INSIDER: Who is the most fundamentally skilled player at the club?

TS: Kyle Borg

INSIDER: Who is your favorite footy person at the club?

TS: All of the volunteers

INSIDER: Are you a footy head - how do you consume your footy each week?

TS: I love footy and the strategies that go with it. Watch a bit of AFL, have some good networks.

INSIDER: If you had to cook for the whole club what would be your signature dish of approval?

TS: Some form of meat on a spit.

INSIDER: Invite 5 people whoever you like to sit at the dinner table with you...

TS: My wife Michelle, Roger Federer, Luke Hodge, Tom Brady.

INSIDER: Who at the club would most likely win a million dollars on a quiz show?

TS: Jordy Kight

INSIDER: Who at the club thinks they're funnier than they really are?

TS: Can't answer without offending haha!

INSIDER: Name a player that has any unusual, weird superstitions ahead of game time...

TS: Couple of players (nameless) like to shower pregame!

INSIDER: Favorite AFL club and player?

TS: Hawthorn, Toby Greene

INSIDER: If you could add three players from other BFNL clubs to your list, who would you pick?

TS: Brett Bewley (Darley), Brady Wright (Darley), Riley Polkinghorne (North Ballarat) & Tony Lockyer (Sebastopol).

INSIDER: I said you could only have three! haha

With the 2025 season on the horizon, Scoop has caught up with all our senior footy coaches as we build towards an epic Round 1!

Entering their second year under senior coach Dennis Armfield, the Cobras are looking to add a few more strings to their bow as they prepare to continue their build towards finals football.

SCOOP: Welcome Dennis, what did you learn about the Cobras in your first year in charge?

DENNIS ARMFIELD: Well firstly, I must admit I was positively surprised with the high quality of competition in the BFNL. You can't afford to be off the mark. At Bacchus Marsh we're confident the foundations in place both on and off field will hold us good stead. Our junior program is sound and will continue to grow. For our senior group, we need to develop our Plan B and Plan C styles, building on our ability to adapt on the run (in games). We will refine our game style to aid in maximising our strengths while minimising those (strengths) of the opposition. We must develop our ability to put value on the right aspects of the game both individually and as a team.

S: Do you believe this (predominantly) young group needs more experienced players around them to truly flourish?

DA: It's definitely something we've considered - targeting players in their mid to late 20's to add to the group. However, these 'young' blokes are now in the 20+ games bracket and need to develop their own self-belief. We believe we have the necessary tools accompanied by a new-look coaching team that provides clarity on roles, responsibilities and success KPI's within a more structured system. More broadly we have identified the need for more effective coach-player communications and are working hard in this space.

S: The signing of Geelong premiership player Zach Tuohy is great news for the club - how did that come about and how many number of games are the club expecting from the 35 year old?

DA: Zach and I go back to our Carlton days and have been great mates since, connecting monthly on the golf course. Getting him to Bacchus Marsh has been a gradual build over the last six months post knowledge of his intended retirement from the AFL. Zach wants to contribute as often as he can and will be available pending his schedule and we as a club fully support him on this journey. We're hopeful for more than less but cannot give you a finite number for you at this time.

S: Just the one win at home in 2024, how do you go about restoring a 'hard to beat' reputation at Maddingley Park?

DA: We want to be hard to beat anywhere. We are working to develop our 'brand’ and this is not about just building a reputation at home. Consistency and effort from quarter to quarter, week to week will see us tough to play home or away, week in, week out.

S: What does the announcement of Sam Lalor as the number one draft pick mean to a local footy club like Bacchus Marsh?

DA: Incredible achievement from Sam, the club and the community is very proud. We had 100+ attend the club to watch the draft night unfold highlighting the support. The announcement speaks volumes of his effort. The Lalor family name is embedded with Bacchus Marsh. For the record we tried to get Sam to play a couple of games for us last year but for obvious reasons (AFL focus) it didn't eventuate.

S: Jake Owen has been your most important key position player for a number of years now. Who is next in line capable of impacting games at either end?

DA: Jake has been crucial - a bona fide team first leader by example. We need to diversify our options - I can see either Nick Dunshea, Will Lalor, Rhy Penny, Kai Tyrell or Jackson Dellar holding down a key post with an aerial presence in front of (forward) or behind the ball (down back).

S: Have you settled upon what roles best suit next gen quintet Josh Huxtable, Isaac Nixon, Will Lalor, Ethan McKercher and Jack Kovacevic?

DA: The short answer is no but that's not a bad thing. They all have their preferred role and we agree on this however, we'll continue to diversify their game - flexibility and adaptability are crucial for the modern day player. It's a great problem to have especially when we need to explore our Plan B and C option for example. All have strong development on the back of a strong pre-season so far.

S: Last year you ranked 9th for offence and 8th in defence but there were honourable losses late against Darley (24) and Sunbury (13). How do you coach belief that your best is capable?

DA: Belief is built on preparation. I afforded too many freedoms to the group last year (shoot-outs) - I’ll own that and will fine tune the approach for 2025. We need to minimise damage, reset quickly and avoid compounding outcomes (i.e. back-to-back goals). Belief is not lost within our group - we know our best is very competitive, having greater consistency can only aid belief.

S: Tell us about the new additions to the club and their likely roles…

DA: Z. Tuohy (Geelong AFL) - leadership. education, flexibility
N. Dunshea (SANFL) - 6'5" forward/back option
J. Fulton (Pint, Bell Park) - inside mid, powerful kick, scoring ability
J. Wheeler (Melton) - running mid
J. Goble (Point Cook) - aggressive small defender/mid
C. Lear (Western Suns) - 150 senior games experience, leadership, key back
L. Braszell - strong, aerial strength, balanced
H. Coller - 6'2", basketball background, predictability

S: What's the message to Cobra fans ahead of the new season?

DA: To our loyal Cobra community - thank you. 2025 is about growth, resilience and building a proud brand of footy. We're excited about our on and off field representation and rapt to have added fresh faces to both our football and netball programs. We'll continue working hard to provide a welcoming environment where people want to come. We are realistic of the challenge ahead, but the boys have embraced everything to date. Stay loud and proud Cobra fans and we'll see you all in round one at Maddingley Park when we take on the Lakers.

Up next in the 2021 club-by-club draw analysis is the season ahead for Ballarat. BFNL Media’s ‘Scoop’ will serve up an in-depth look at the pros and cons of the fixture for each club over the next two weeks.

Ballarat

Draw rating points: 109
2021 draw ranking: #10

Play TWICE: Darley, Lake Wendouree, Melton South, East Point, Sunbury, Sebastopol

Travel EAST: THREE times: Sunbury (Rd6), Melton South (Rd8), Darley (Rd12)

WEST 'highway travel' record (2018 & 2019 home and away seasons): Played 7 Won 1 Lost 6 @16% win rate

PROS:

  • Don't leave Ballarat until Round SIX (v. Sunbury)
  • At home FOUR of SEVEN games Rd4 to Rd11 and Rd10 to the bye, only AWAY against Sunbury Rd6 and Melton South Rd8

CONS:

  • Play FOUR of 2019 Finalists twice including Grand Final duo East Point and Sebastopol (as well as Darley and Sunbury)
  • Finish season with East Point (away), Sunbury (home), Sebastopol (away) - big ask

Comment:

Can't wait to see Josh Gibson in Ballarat colours, what a coup for the club and competition on the whole. However, the Swans draw on paper has done little to enhance their finals chances. I hope I’m wrong. Coach Joe Carmody is a ripper bloke and his positivity over the group, with the addition of Gibson, will stir upset results.

With the 2025 season on the horizon, Scoop has caught up with all our senior footy coaches as we build towards an epic Round 1!

We saw the Swans surge into the finals action last year, how will the red and white go in this season under new coach Ash Baker?

SCOOP: Welcome Ash to the BFNL coaching ranks - tell us a bit about yourself and how you landed the job at the Swans...

ASH BAKER: I'm a former coach of the Swans, not unfamiliar with the surroundings. I met with fellow teacher and outgoing coach Chris Maple and post those discussions (in a round-about way) I was appointed.

S: What sort of footy can we expect to see from the Swans in 2025?

AB: We'll aim to continue the hard work done from previous years. In a nutshell, method at the contest, spread well and good use of the footy should hold us in good stead.

S: What challenges do you think playing an extra two games with less breaks present now each team has the opportunity of playing each other twice?

AB: It certainly evens up the draw, no excuses. Recovery/fatigue may play a role but on the positive we get the opportunity to get more games into our group.

S: Have you watched any vision of the Swans in preparation or is it a clean slate approach?

AB: I've watched plenty of vision and saw a few games live so I’m aware of our immediate strengths and areas required for improvement.

S: Tell us about AFL newcomer Bigoa 'Biggie' Nyuon and the flexibility he brings.....

AB: Biggie is excited to be on board. At the moment we've targeted a key role in defence for him. He's quick and at 200cm has the versatility to go forward or pinch hit in the ruck if required. But predominately back at this stage for Biggie.

S: You lose Lauchlan Dalgleish, Rhys Perry and Keegan Mellington all handy types - have you the depth to cover them and challenge again at the pointy end when the whips are cracking?

AB: It does hurt losing players, there's no shying away from that but we have an exciting group ready to impact at the level now in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of senior footy at BFNL level.

S: What has impressed you most at the Swans on and off field over your short time in the job?

AB: On field - commitment of the players especially in a busy four-week block before Christmas. Their willingness to learn is also a huge plus.

Off field - Giving the players every chance of success providing the professional support needed - i.e. strength and conditioning, physio (Tuesdays), trainers (Tues & Thurs) and the addition of a new list manager.

S: 2023/24 Coach Chris Maple remains at the club - what is his new role?

AB: Chris will work with our junior coaches ensuring development and further education.

S: Club Best and Fairest Will Liston is also a big loss - are we likely to see Tristan Maple spend more time through the midfield or is his niche essentially off half back?

AB: We anticipate a similar role for Tristan (Half back/mid) as he continues to grow and develop.

S: Carisbrook trio Harry Butler and the Rinaldi brothers Lewis and Zach impressed, especially in the second half of the season - how are they travelling and what roles have been earmarked for them?

AB: Harry only played 9 games last year - he's up and firing which is really exciting for us. Zak Rinaldi hasn't missed a beat and will again be given a forward/mid role while Lewis is playing in the NT at the moment. Given his numbers especially in the second half of the season you can lock in a starting midfield role.

The change in the junior football structure has been delayed in an effort to provide certainty and continuity to clubs, players and families.

The board of the McDonald's Ballarat FNL has met recently and confirmed the junior age structure shall remain as an ‘odd’ structure for season 2022.

To provide some certainty and continuity, the existing ‘odd’ structure will continue through 2021 and will allow for further assessment to be made based on the ever-changing world we live in

After consideration of many aspects, not least of which is club feedback and registration data, the league believes it is in the best interest of the competition to delay the change of age groups until season 2023.

When the decision was made to change the structure of juniors in the Ballarat FNL, COVID had not yet appeared in our daily lives and the disruption currently felt over the past two years was not envisaged by anyone.

Junior football in 2022 shall consist of:

  • • Under 17 Senior / Reserves Football
  • • Under 15 Senior / Reserves Football
  • • Under 13 Senior / Reserves Football
  • • Under 11 Senior / Reserves Football
  • • Under 9 Senior / Reserves Football (Friday night competition)

Further to the above, the Under 19’s shall remain as that grade in 2022.

The board is committed to implementing a structure for junior football that will best cater for the growing demands of our competition and ensure the long-term viability of the Ballarat FNL Juniors moving forward.
